Open notebook and pen on a round table with sunlight casting shadows. A cup of black coffee sits nearby, creating a serene workspace.

Your website is often the first impression people have of your business. It should be clear, inviting, and built with intention. But even the most beautiful websites can miss the mark when key details are overlooked. In this post, I’ll walk you through 5 common website mistakes that could be turning potential clients away—and how you can fix them.

1. No Clear Call to Action

If your visitors land on your site and don’t know what to do next, they’re likely to leave. A strong call to action (CTA) guides your audience toward a goal, whether it's booking a call, signing up for your newsletter, or purchasing a product.

Fix it: Make sure each page has a clear next step. Use buttons and direct language like “Book Now”, “Work With Me”, or “Start Here” to gently guide visitors toward action.

Example: Think of your homepage like the front door of a shop. If there’s no signage pointing people to the counter or what’s on offer, they’ll likely wander out again. Every section should lead naturally to a next step.

2. Too Much or Too Little Text

Content matters. Too much text can overwhelm your visitors, while too little can leave them confused about who you are and what you offer.

Fix it: Keep your copy clear and concise. Focus on what matters most: what you do, who you serve, and how people can work with you. Break long paragraphs into short, digestible sections.

Example: A wellness coach’s homepage should give a calm, confident sense of their work, without overwhelming visitors with their entire life story. Think of your homepage as a friendly hello, not a novel.

3. Not Mobile-Friendly

More than half of web traffic comes from mobile devices. If your website isn’t optimised for phones and tablets, you could be missing out on a huge portion of your audience.

Fix it: Make sure your site design adjusts smoothly to different screen sizes. Buttons should be easy to tap, and text should be legible without zooming in. Wix makes it easy to preview and customise your mobile layout.

Example: Test your own site by navigating it on your phone. If you find yourself pinching to zoom, hunting for the menu, or struggling to click buttons, your visitors probably are too.

4. Slow Loading Speed

A slow site doesn’t just frustrate visitors, it can also hurt your Google ranking. People have short attention spans, and if your site takes more than a few seconds to load, many will click away.

Fix it: Optimise your images, avoid too many animations, and keep your layout clean. Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to check and improve your load times.

Example: Uploading high-resolution images without compressing them is one of the biggest culprits. Try to keep image file sizes under 500KB where possible, especially for homepage visuals.

5. Outdated or Inconsistent Branding

If your colours, fonts, or tone of voice feel mismatched or outdated, your website might not be reflecting the professional presence you want.

Fix it: Stick to a cohesive brand style. Choose 2-3 fonts, a colour palette that matches your brand personality, and consistent imagery. If you’re unsure where to start, a simple brand guide can work wonders.

Example: Imagine visiting a site where the homepage feels modern and minimal, but the service page suddenly switches to a bright, playful tone with cartoon-style fonts. It can feel confusing or untrustworthy. Consistency builds credibility.

Quick Recap:

Here’s a short checklist to keep in mind:

  • ✅ Is there a clear call to action on every page?

  • ✅ Is your copy easy to read and not too overwhelming?

  • ✅ Does your website look good and work well on mobile?

  • ✅ Are your images optimised and your pages loading quickly?

  • ✅ Does your branding feel cohesive and up to date?

Your website doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective, it just needs to be intentional.

By making these small but impactful changes, you can turn your website into a space that truly supports your business growth and connects with your audience.
